There is an AIDS pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa, and through
absolutely no fault of their own, many children are being adversely affected by
HIV/AIDS . Many babies are found abandoned each day in
South Africa by desperate mothers often because of poverty or the threat of HIV/AIDS.
Our plan is to give HOPE to as many children as we can
by providing homes and care in a variety of communities where there is a need. Our
aim is to ensure that babies and children grow up in a loving family environment.
Ikholwa has a team of dedicated childcare workers who
bond with and nurture these babies from infancy and for as long as they are with
us. Local clinics such as Wilgeheuwel, Weltevreden, Olivedale and local hospitals
such as Baragwanath and Coronation, with their medical professionals and volunteers,
strengthen the support structure. We administer the best medical treatment to nurture,
enrich and enhance each child's life. It has been noted that some babies born of
HIV+ mothers have a good chance of avoiding the disease
when they are given the correct medical treatment, nutrition and care.
Babies are placed for adoption with legal agencies.
HIV+ babies are not easily adopted and it is these children
that if given the correct medical care, nutrition and nurture can live prolonged,
near normal lives. Schooling will also be provided for these children, from preschool,
through high-school and then on to a tertiary education or skills training as and
when necessary.
